Fabulous Forgeries, January, 2016 Winner of one of the People's Choice Awards at the Artist's Gallery, Virginia Beach VA | This little mademoiselle was on vacation in the village of Barbizon with her family when they commissioned Renoir to paint her. The artist was only 23 at the time and this may be his earliest signed work. Apparently he destroyed most of the work he did between 1862 and 1866 out of dissatisfaction. Can anyone relate? Some critics have commented that the lustrous color he used reminded them that Renoir was once an apprentice china painter. At age 13, Renoir’s father sent him to a Parisian factory where he learned the art of porcelain painting and those skills were engrained in him for four years. Original painting by Pierre August Renoir (1864) |
