Madame X was a professional beauty who was sought after by artists. Mr. Sargent won the honor of painting her and submitted it to the Paris Salon of 1884.
He painted her as I have represented, with the strap down. When the Salon opened, Paris was scandalized! The lady was humiliated and the Salon demanded that the painting be removed, redone with the offending strap modestly returned to her shoulder. This is the version that is seen today in the Metropolitan. I have painted her in her original sensual pose. Take that, Salon!
Original Painting by John Singer Sargent (1883)
