Although The Gleaners was accepted by the 1857 Paris Salon, it was not well received by the upper and middle classes.
It reminded them of glorifying the class conflict which led to the French Revolution of 1848, a harbinger of socialism. The painting sold for far less than Millet wanted and never gained appreciation until after his death in 1875. Original Painting by Jean-Francois Millet (1857) |
